50 g of shredded Banisteriopsis caapi Yellow Peru vine.
History
Banisteriopsis caapi is a traditional Amazonian vine associated with ayahuasca, a ceremonial preparation whose name is often translated as “vine of the soul”. Indigenous communities have used the plant within spiritual and ceremonial traditions for generations, where it has been regarded as a teacher plant and an important component of ritual practices.
The vine contains naturally occurring beta-carboline alkaloids, including compounds with monoamine oxidase-inhibiting (MAOI) activity. Within traditional ayahuasca preparations, B. caapi is combined with other plants containing psychoactive compounds. Because these alkaloids can interact significantly with medicines and other substances, particular caution is required.
Indigenous traditions recognise numerous varieties and forms of Banisteriopsis caapi, with names and characteristics varying between regions and communities. The plant has also featured in traditional herbal practices, although traditional use should not be interpreted as evidence of a medical treatment or therapeutic effect.
Use
Preparation and consumption of Banisteriopsis caapi can involve significant health and medication-interaction risks. We do not recommend preparing or consuming this product without appropriate professional guidance.
Because B. caapi contains compounds with MAOI activity, combining it with medicines, antidepressants, recreational substances or other MAO-inhibiting plants can cause serious and potentially dangerous interactions. Consult a qualified doctor or pharmacist before using any product containing Banisteriopsis caapi, particularly if you take prescription or over-the-counter medication.
