About Banisteriopsis caapi
Banisteriopsis caapi is a tropical vine native to South America and is traditionally associated with ayahuasca ceremonies. Its name is often translated as “vine of the soul”. For generations, Indigenous communities have incorporated the plant into ceremonial and spiritual practices, where it has been regarded as a traditional teacher plant.
The vine naturally contains several beta-carboline alkaloids with monoamine oxidase-inhibiting (MAOI) activity. In traditional ayahuasca preparations, B. caapi is combined with plants containing DMT and other compounds. This combination can produce powerful psychoactive effects and may also create serious interactions with medicines and other substances.
Different Indigenous traditions recognise numerous varieties of B. caapi, with names and characteristics differing between regions. Red Brazil is one of the varieties encountered in botanical and ethnobotanical contexts.
Traditional context and effects
Ayahuasca has a long history of ceremonial use in parts of the Amazon. Traditional practitioners have used these preparations for spiritual reflection, ritual purposes and perceived communication with the spiritual world.
The effects of ayahuasca can be intense and unpredictable, and may include profound changes in perception, altered awareness, nausea, vomiting, dizziness and other physical reactions. These effects should not be considered medical or therapeutic benefits.
Use and safety
Because Banisteriopsis caapi contains compounds with MAOI activity, there are significant risks associated with consuming it or combining it with other substances. We cannot provide instructions or dosing guidance for preparing a psychoactive ayahuasca preparation.
Important: Always consult a qualified doctor or pharmacist before using B. caapi, particularly if you take prescription or over-the-counter medicines.
