Passionflower | Passiflora Incarnata | 80 g Shredded
This 80 g pack contains shredded, dried aerial parts of Passiflora incarnata, commonly known as purple passionflower or maypop. Belonging to the Passifloraceae family, this distinctive botanical has a long history of traditional herbal use in the Americas and Europe.
About Passiflora incarnata
Passiflora incarnata is a perennial climbing vine native to the southeastern United States, Mexico, Central America and parts of South America. It is recognised by its intricate flowers, surrounded by a striking corona of fine filaments, and its edible orange-yellow fruit, commonly called maypop.
The plant has featured in Indigenous North American botanical traditions and was subsequently introduced into European herbal practices. Passiflora incarnata is one of more than 500 recognised species within the Passiflora genus and is notable for containing a variety of naturally occurring alkaloids and flavonoid compounds.
Naturally occurring compounds
The dried aerial portions of Passiflora incarnata contain a diverse range of naturally occurring constituents, including:
- Harmala alkaloids such as harmine, harmaline and harmalol, occurring in small quantities
- Flavonoids including vitexin, isovitexin, orientin, isoorientin and chrysin
- Maltol
- Trace cyanogenic glycosides
- Naturally occurring volatile compounds and essential oils
The concentration of individual constituents can vary according to growing conditions, plant maturity, harvesting and processing.
Traditional Preparation
Dried passionflower has traditionally been prepared as a herbal infusion. A conventional preparation involves:
- Place approximately 2 g of the dried, shredded herb in a cup.
- Add around 150 ml of freshly boiled water.
- Allow the infusion to stand for approximately 30 minutes.
- Strain before drinking. Honey or sugar may be added according to personal preference.
Historical accounts describe the use of larger quantities in certain traditional contexts. However, concentrated preparations can alter the exposure to naturally occurring constituents and should not be assumed to be equivalent to ordinary herbal tea.
Important Safety Information
Passiflora incarnata may contain small amounts of harmala alkaloids with monoamine oxidase-inhibiting activity. This is important when considering potential interactions with medicines, foods and other substances.
Do not combine passionflower with prescription antidepressants, MAO inhibitors, stimulants or other medicines that may interact with monoamine oxidase inhibition unless this has been specifically cleared by a qualified healthcare professional.
If you take prescription medication, have an existing medical condition, or are unsure about potential interactions, seek professional medical advice before use. Do not rely on general internet lists of drug or food interactions as a substitute for individual medical guidance.
