Ephedra | Ephedra sinica | 20 seeds
Ephedra sinica, commonly referred to as Chinese Ephedra or Ma Huang, is a distinctive, drought-tolerant shrub adapted to the dry landscapes of northern China and Mongolia.
Its slender, segmented, yellow-green stems give the plant a somewhat reed-like appearance, while its tiny scale-like leaves and understated flowers reflect its adaptation to arid conditions. Mature plants generally remain relatively compact, commonly reaching around 20–40 cm in height.
Chinese Ephedra should not be confused with Ephedra nevadensis, a separate species native to the southwestern United States. Although both belong to the same genus, they are geographically distinct species with different native ranges.
Traditional and Cultural Background
Ephedra sinica has a particularly significant place in the history of traditional Chinese herbalism, where it is known as Ma Huang. Historical Chinese materia medica sources have documented the plant for centuries, making it one of the most culturally recognised botanical species associated with traditional East Asian herbal practice.
Its historical importance extends beyond its botanical characteristics, reflecting the long-standing relationship between traditional herbal systems and the plants found in China’s arid and semi-arid regions.
Cultivation
These seeds are suitable for growing Ephedra sinica under warm, bright and relatively dry conditions. The species is naturally adapted to sandy, well-drained environments and generally performs best when excessive moisture is avoided. For cultivation, provide:
- Sandy or gritty, well-draining soil
- A bright, sunny position
- Good air circulation
- Moderate watering while establishing
- Protection from prolonged waterlogging
Because Chinese Ephedra is adapted to dry climates, consistently wet soil can be detrimental to healthy growth. A container with excellent drainage can be particularly useful in climates where rainfall is frequent.
