Growing Kanna
Kanna is a compact succulent that can be grown indoors in containers or outdoors in suitable climates. Its cultivation requirements are broadly similar to those of other drought-tolerant succulents.
For successful germination, sow the seeds in a light, well-draining cactus or succulent compost. Press the seeds gently into the surface rather than burying them deeply. Place the container somewhere warm and bright, while protecting the young plants from excessive direct sunlight during their earliest stages.
Keep the growing medium only lightly moist and avoid overwatering, as prolonged dampness can lead to root or seedling rot. Depending on conditions, germination may take anywhere from approximately two weeks to several weeks.
Native to South Africa, Kanna is adapted to bright conditions and relatively limited rainfall. Once established, it generally prefers plenty of natural light, moderate temperatures and careful watering. Choose a pot with adequate drainage holes to prevent excess moisture from accumulating around the roots.
The plant develops attractive, fleshy leaves and can produce delicate yellow flowers. Its compact appearance makes it suitable not only for botanical cultivation but also as an ornamental succulent for a bright windowsill, balcony or sheltered outdoor space.
About Kanna
Kanna is the common name for Sceletium tortuosum, a small succulent originating in South Africa. The species belongs to the Aizoaceae family and is recognised for its fleshy foliage and ability to tolerate relatively dry growing conditions.
The plant has attracted considerable ethnobotanical interest because of its long association with traditional practices in southern Africa. Today, Kanna is also known internationally as a distinctive botanical species with a rich cultural history.
Traditional and Historical Use
For centuries, Sceletium tortuosum was used by indigenous communities in southern Africa in traditional and ceremonial contexts. Historical accounts describe its association with Khoikhoi and San communities, who valued the plant within established cultural practices.
Kanna was traditionally prepared from the plant material and was associated with social, ceremonial and practical uses. Historical descriptions also refer to its traditional use during periods of physical or emotional strain and in connection with hunting and community activities.
European settlers encountered the plant during their interactions with southern African communities and recorded names such as kaugoed, commonly translated as “chewing stuff”, reflecting one of its traditional preparations.
Modern interest in Kanna is largely centred on its ethnobotanical background and naturally occurring alkaloids. Scientific research into Sceletium species remains ongoing, and traditional descriptions should not be interpreted as established medical claims.
Botanical Characteristics
Sceletium tortuosum is a low-growing succulent adapted to the dry landscapes of South Africa. It produces thick, water-storing leaves and can develop small yellow flowers under suitable growing conditions.
Its natural adaptation to limited rainfall makes drainage particularly important when cultivating it outside its native environment. Excessive watering is one of the main factors to avoid when growing young Kanna plants.
