Each package contains 25 g of dried, shredded Marshmallow leaves (Althaea officinalis).
Traditional Properties of Marshmallow
Marshmallow is a traditional herbal plant valued for the naturally occurring mucilage found throughout the plant, particularly in its roots and leaves. These water-soluble polysaccharides form a soft, soothing layer when mixed with water.
Traditionally, Marshmallow has been used in herbal preparations intended to soothe irritated mucous membranes, particularly those of the throat, respiratory tract and digestive system. It has therefore long been associated with traditional preparations for coughs, throat discomfort and minor digestive irritation.
While Marshmallow has a long history of traditional use, individual responses can vary and traditional applications should not be regarded as a substitute for professional medical treatment.
How to Use Marshmallow
The dried leaves can be prepared as a simple herbal infusion.
Marshmallow Tea
- Use approximately 2–5 teaspoons of the shredded leaves per cup.
- Add hot water and allow the herb to infuse.
- Strain before drinking.
- Honey or sugar can be added according to taste.
Marshmallow leaves may also be suitable for use in certain herbal vaporisers designed for dried botanical material. Always follow the manufacturer’s instructions for the equipment being used.
History of Marshmallow
Althaea officinalis, commonly known as Marshmallow, belongs to the Malvaceae family, which also includes plants such as cacao, cotton and okra.
The species has a long-standing association with wetlands and riverbanks and is native to parts of Europe, North Africa and western and central Asia. It has subsequently become established in other regions, including parts of North America.
Marshmallow has been appreciated in traditional herbal practices for centuries. Historical records indicate that ancient Egyptian and Greek cultures were familiar with the plant and its traditional uses. Greek herbal traditions, in particular, associated Marshmallow with preparations for throat and respiratory discomfort.
The plant was also valued as a food source. Historical accounts describe its consumption during periods when other food supplies were limited, while the Romans regarded certain preparations as a delicacy.
Interestingly, the modern confection known as marshmallow takes its name from this plant. Traditional versions were made using extracts from Marshmallow roots, which were combined with sweeteners to produce a soft confection. Modern marshmallows are generally made using different ingredients, but the original name remains.
